I n eight volumes, this unique handbook covers all fundamental aspects of surface and interface science and offers a comprehensive overview of this research area for scientists working in the field, as well as an introduction for newcomers. Volume 1 presents a detailed description of the most important theoretical and experimental tools of surface science. Our present knowledge about the specific physics and chemistry of surfaces and interfaces is described in the following volumes in the order of increasing complexity. Volume 1: Concepts and Methods Volume 2: Properties of Elemental Surfaces Volume 3: Properties of Composite Surfaces: Alloys, Compounds, Semiconductors Volume 4: Solid–Solid Interfaces and Thin Films Volume 5: Solid–Gas Interfaces I Volume 6: Solid–Gas Interfaces II Volume 7: Solid–Liquid and Biological Interfaces Volume 8: Applications of Surface Science In this volume: Introduction: An Intuitive Approach to Surface and Interface Science An Introduction to the Theory of Crystalline Elemental Solids and their Surfaces Experimental Surface Methods Low–Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED) Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Diffraction Spectroscopic Databases and Standardization for Auger–Electron Spectroscopy and X–Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy Two–Photon Photoelectron Spectroscopy Ion Scattering Spectroscopy Photon Spectroscopy X–Ray Diffraction from Surfaces and Interfaces Scanning Probe Techniques

Klaus Wandelt is Full Professor in Physical Chemistry and Director of the Institute of Physical and Theoretical Chemistry at the University of Bonn, Germany. In 1975 he received his PhD on electron spectroscopic investigations of alloy surfaces. After a postdoctoral stay at the IBM–Research Laboratory in San Jose, California, he qualified as a professor on the concept and detection of the local work function in 1981. His research interests focuses on fundamental aspects of the physics and chemistry of metal surfaces under ultrahigh vacuum conditions and in electrolytes, on the atomic structure of amorphous materials, and more recently on processes at the surface of plants. Professor Wandelt has organized numerous national and international conferences and workshops, edited conference proceedings and books, and published about 400 research papers.

Comments on the series′ concept "This looks like an ambitious project that fills a clear need." "I believe that it is really important to write a large handbook on surface science, it is really missing." "Your project is very attractive indeed, and I believe that it will be welcome to many present and future ′surfacists′ and those who apply surface phenomena in technology."
