The goal of this volume is to provide a general introduction into the field of Biophotonics i.e. a fundamental coverage of the basic principles in photonics is required. Thus this volume should start with a detailed de–scription of the property of light, of light matter interaction, as well as the necessary optical instrumentation to induce and monitor the linear and non–linear light matter interactions and light matter response. To reach this goal this volume should contain extended contributions of well known textbook authors such as e.g. P.W. At–kins, W. Demtröder, P.A. Tippler, W. Schmidt, Hollas etc. This volume therefore does not so much concen–trate on recent a
dvances in photonic research but rather emphasizes the photonic background being an es–sential prerequisite to understand and appreciate the world of Biophotonics presented in the following two volumes.
