Now in its second edition and further expanded by 15%, this encyclopedic work is one of the largest resources on marine natural products. It contains an exhaustive and systematic listing of more than 9,000 formulae and 10,000 references with around 650 relevant websites. The unique approach of classifying the compounds by biological species together with their background information makes this particularly useful for marine biologists, and contributed significantly to the overwhelming success of the previous edition. The digital version (ISBN 978–3–527–33585–5) now features a completely cross–linked library of compounds for easy access to related substances, making it even more useful for biologists, chemists and pharmacologists alike.

Born in France in 1941, Jean–Michel Kornprobst is Professor Emeritus since 2003. From 1990 to 2003, he was Professor of Physical and Organic Chemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy in Nantes, France, and Director of the Marine Chemistry Laboratory since 1996. After having obtained his academic degrees in chemistry from the «École nationale supérieure de chimie» of Montpellier, France, he gained his PhD at the University of Lyon in 1969. After having worked as an associate professor in the laboratory of Professor J.E. Dubois at Paris 7 University, he became Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Dakar, Senegal, in 1974. From that date on he worked in the field of marine organic chemistry. He learnt scuba diving and founded the first diving school in West Africa, «Oceanium de Dakar», in 1984. In 1989 J.–M. Kornprobst organized the 6th International Symposium on Marine Natural Products (MaNaPro 6) in Dakar. In the 1990s he was member of the editorial advisory board of Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology and Journal of Marine Biotechnology. From 1993 to 2002, J.–M. Kornprobst was responsible for two research programs on marine natural products at the University of Qatar and at the King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He has authored more than 400 scientific works, mainly in the field of marine natural products and serves as referee for numerous scientific journals. J.–M. Kornprobst has recently been an invited professor at the University of Louvain–la–Neuve, Belgium, Campinas, Brazil, and Blida, Algeria. He is currently member of the scientific advisory board of the Marine Biotechnology Research Center (MBRC) of Rimouski, Quebec, Canada.
