This new volume in the Handbook of Sports Medicine and Science series published in conjunction with the Medical Commission of the International Olympic Committee and the Sports Science Committee of the International Paralympic Committee examines Paralympic athletes across sports. Written by leaders of the Paralympic Movement, the book guides readers through the sport–related issues that are unique to Paralympic athletes and provides practical guidance on optimizing care and enhancing performance.
The book starts with a comprehensive introduction to the Paralympic Movement, followed by discipline–specific reviews from leading authorities in sport science, each covering the biomechanics, physiology, medicine, philosophy, sociology, and psychology of Paralympic sports. The Paralympic Athlete also addresses the scientific counseling of athletes, as well as recent assessment and training tools, which are of particular interest to scientists, medical professionals, athletes, trainers and coaches.
