Just as in society, the mortgage market may exclude people on the basis of place, as well as race. Place–based exclusion in the mortgage market often takes the form of "redlining," a tacit agreement among lending institutions to delineate sections of cities into areas where no home mortgages are to be issued. Manuel B. Aalbers is a Researcher in the Department of Geography, Planning and International Development Studies at the University of Amsterdam. He is the Associate Editor of the Encyclopedia of Urban Studi es (2009), and has published extensively on redlining, gentrification, the privatization of social housing, financialization, and the Anglophone hegemony in academic writing.
