Nota biograficzna:
Dr John Cherrie is an Occupational Hygienist and Director of Special Projects at the Institute of Occupational Medicine in Edinburgh and Honorary Reader at the University of Aberdeen. He has been a member of the Defra Advisor Committee on Pesticides for three years.
Dr Sean Semple is a Lecturer with the Department of Environmental and Occupational Medicine at the University of Aberdeen, UK. Since joining in January 1998 he has developed an interest in exposure assessment with particular emphasis on exposure modelling of both dermal and ingestion exposure routes. He is involved in a wide–range of departmental research including work on the measurement of Environmental Tobacco Smoke exposure (CSO study) and a forthcoming study on the health impact of the Scottish ban on smoking in public places (BHETSE study). He works with John Cherrie and Yvette Christopher on a project examining the importance of inadvertent ingestion of chemicals in the workplace. He has also been involved in an HSE funded project to investigate the causative factors of dermatitis among workers exposed to metal working fluids.
His exposure assessment work also takes in other departmental research projects such as the Geoparkinson Study of genetic, environmental and occupational links to Parkinson′s disease; and the Cardiac study looking at the relationship between indoor and outdoor air pollution and cardiovascular health effects. Sean also works closely with Dr John Ross and has helped on the ETHLI study looking at the health of divers and welders. Sean was previously involved in an in–depth project investigating the neurotoxic effects of solvents amongst painters. He has an interest in potential occupational exposures to nanoparticles and presented to the Royal Society working group on nanotechnology on nanoparticles and dermal exposure.
In addition to his research activity Sean is the course co–ordinator for the MSc (Research) in Occupational Hygiene and supervises a number of Ph.D. and M.Phil students.
Sean was the winner of the European Centre for Ecotoxicology and Toxicology of Ch emicals (ECETOC) Science Award 2003 for his contribution to the field of Occupational Health and used his award to travel to Kuala Lumpur to foster links with the emerging occupational hygiene sector in Malaysia.
Sean is based at both DEOM and the Institute of Occupational Medicine in Edinburgh where he collaborates with the Human Exposure Research Alliance scientists on a number of University/IOM projects. He is also the British Occupational Hygiene Society Regional Organiser for Scotland and sits on the Editorial Board of the Annals of Occupational Hygiene.
Before joining the department he completed a B.Sc. (Hons) in Medical Science at St Andrews University and an M.Sc. in Biological NMR at Dundee University. He completed the M.Sc. in Occupational Hygiene at Aberdeen University in 1997. His other academic interests include the health effects of electromagnetic fields and the compilation of a European inventory of exposure related research.
