The Handbook of Translation and Cognition

The Handbook of Translation and Cognition is a pioneering investigation of cognitive approaches to translation and interpreting studies (TIS). It offers timely and cutting–edge coverage of the most important theoretical frameworks and methodological innovations in the field. It contains 30 original contributions from a global group of leading researchers, who represent institutions and research centers from 18 countries around the world.

In addition to key theory and experimental approaches, the articles explore a broad range of topics related to translator and workplace characteristics including machine translation, creativity, ergonomic perspectives, and cognitive effort, and competence, training, and interpreting such as multimodal processing, neurocognitive optimization, process–oriented pedagogies, and conceptual change. The final two chapters map out future directions for cognition and translation studies, as well as areas in need of more research.

John W. Schwieter is Associate Professor of Spanish and Linguistics and a Faculty of Arts Teaching Scholar at Wilfrid Laurier University, Canada, and Visiting Professor of Applied Linguistics in the Centre for Applied Research and Outreach in Language Education at the University of Greenwich, England. He is editor of several books, including Cognitive Control and Consequences of Multilingualism (2016), The Cambridge Handbook of Bilingual Processing (2015), and Innovative Research and Practices in Second Language Acquisition and Bilingualism (2013).
