This volume provides a comprehensive collection of classic and contemporary readings in the philosophy of logic. The selections include some of the most important, technically exact, yet lucid and readable expositions of central concepts and controversies in philosophical logic. Areas of coverage include classical logic, truth, propositions and meaning, quantifiers and quantificational theory, validity, inference and entailment, and modality, intensionality and propositional attitude.

Since the articles are written from a variety of perspectives, the reader is able to critically assess the background and current trends in philosophical applications of symbolic logic. The volume also examines the limitations of classical and nonstandard logics.

The book complements Philosophy of Mathematics: An Anthology and A Companion to Philosophical Logic, also edited by Dale Jacquette.

Dale Jacquette is Professor of Philosophy at The Pennsylvania State University. He is the author of Philosophy of Mind (1994), Meinongian Logic: The Semantics of Existence and Nonexistence (1996), Wittgenstein′s Thought in Transition (1998), Symbolic Logic (2001) and On Boole: Logic as Algebra (2001) as well as numerous articles on logic, metaphysics, philosophy of mind, and Wittgenstein.

"The Blackwell Philosophy Anthologies have set a very high standard and Dale Jacquette′s Philosophy of Logic handily maintains this customary level of breadth of coverage and importance of content. Its inclusion of a vast amount of interesting material will make teaching from this anthology a delight." Nicholas Rescher, University of Pittsburgh <!––end––>

"Dale Jacquette in Philosophy of Logic: An Anthology brings together some of the most important papers in twentieth–century philosophy of logic ... as a source book for a course on philosophy of logic it is a useful collection. It would also provide supplementary reading for courses on philosophy of mathematics or language." Times Higher Education Supplement
