A Roadmap to Non-Hematopoietic Stem Cell-Based Therapeutics: From the Bench to the Clinic provides basic stem cell principles, promises, challenges for the use of stem cells in various clinical conditions, and future prospects. Ultimately, the volume serves as a tool to facilitate the development and use of stem cell-based therapies. The advantages and disadvantages of various sources of stem cells are discussed. In addition, preconditioning by physical, chemical, genetic, and biomolecular manipulation is covered to improve cell survival, increase cell differentiation potential, enhance production of paracrine factors, and facilitate homing to the site of injury or disease upon transplantation.
Individual chapters are written by experts in the field who focus on the use of stem cells in treating various degenerative diseases, including neurological disorders, autoimmune diseases, wound healing, cardiovascular diseases, liver diseases, spinal cord injury, and skeletal disorders. Finally, experts from regulatory agencies, such as the FDA, discuss the regulatory pathway leading to the approval of stem cell-based therapies and address critical issues commonly encountered in the development of this class of therapeutics.
